Growing up in West Virginia, George Tackett has always known about water meters. According to Tackett, West Virginia has had water meters since back in the 1930s. Now living in a drought region, Tackett couldn't imagine not having a meter.
"It just makes sense," said Tackett, a former government affairs representative. "When you go to the gas station you don't get to pay a flat rate for as much gas as you want. You pay for what you use. The same should be true with water meters."

Tackett converted to a water meter in 1995. He worked in the water division of Sierra Pacific Power Company for many years and understands our water system and the need to conserve. After his neighbor learned about how much money he was saving, he decided to get a meter.
The Tackett's use a sprinkler system for their low-maintenance yard and practice both indoor and outdoor conservation. The family's monthly water bill reflects yard water usage from January to December of 2003. They receive higher water costs during the summer months, with lower costs during the fall and winter. Their average monthly water bill is $34.58 over the last year, which is $18 less per month than they would pay for a flat rate service.
