First, the Good News: Our Water Supply
Drought reserves will not be tapped.
Truckee River flows will be maintained through year's end.
The official April 1 snowpack numbers were good for the two basins that impact the Truckee Meadows' water supply. The Truckee Basin was at 121% of average and the Lake Tahoe Basin -- 137% of average. View snowpack explanation and historical data. After five consecutive below-average runoff years, it appears that the trend has improved this year with runoff (water making it to the lakes and reservoirs) in excess of 145% of average for Lake Tahoe and 131% for the Truckee River Basin. The cool, wet spring weather we experienced, coupled with precipitation in May and June, kept the snowpack intact later than expected. This certainly makes this a very good water year - but it is still not a "drought buster," unfortunately. It will take several of these above-average years to make up the deficit that's been created by five years of below-normal conditions.

Water in the Legislature: AB 323
TMWA Board and Staff Supports Audit
One topic that placed TMWA in the news recently was Assembly Bill 323 that passed through the Nevada Legislature. This bill legislates an audit and investigation of TMWA's ratemaking practices and financial factors by the State Bureau of Consumer Protection (BCP) and requires TMWA fund up to $100,000 for the audit. The TMWA Board voted in full support of this audit; however, they voiced concerns about TMWA customers bearing the cost. With Board approval, the check has been cut and delivered to the State. TMWA looks forward to working with the BCP on the audit, which we believe will be an ideal forum for an objective look at the financial requirements of the utility and the appropriate funding sources of those requirements. We will make sure you are informed of the audit results.
Water meter retrofit is nearing completion
Metered billing is still voluntary
The program provides drought storage
TMWA is in the final stretch of finishing up our water meter retrofit program. We anticipate having all single-family residences installed with a meter by the end of this summer, leaving just over 7,000 condominiums, duplexes and multi-family units to be retrofitted. We will continue working to finish the remaining installations over the next several years.
